Minneapolis in 1911 still ran largely on flour, with mills along the Mississippi below St. Anthony Falls grinding Northwest wheat for bakers across the country and overseas. The Great Northern and the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul railroads moved grain and lumber into the city and carried finished goods out, and the riverfront was crowded with elevators and warehouses. Residents took pride in the chain of lakes and parkways laid out by the Minneapolis Park Board, which gave working families green space within a short streetcar ride of home. Automobiles were beginning to appear on the wider streets, though horses still dominated the wagon traffic downtown.
