Minneapolis in 1911 was the milling capital of the United States, with flour mills lining the Mississippi riverfront below St. Anthony Falls and grain moving through the city's rail yards and elevators. The city's population was approaching 300,000, and the lumber trade, wholesale houses, and a growing streetcar network had made it the commercial center of the upper Midwest. Civic life centered on downtown, where department stores, banks, and office blocks rose along Nicollet Avenue and Hennepin Avenue. Residents in 1911 knew the city as the "Mill City," a name tied to the falls that had powered its growth since the 1850s.
