St. Paul in 1911 was the Minnesota capital, a city of roughly 215,000 people whose wholesale houses, factories, and rail yards still drove its economy. The Great Northern Railway, built under James J. Hill, kept its headquarters here, and its freight houses and yards along the river employed a large share of the working population. Construction of the Cathedral of St. Paul, a massive stone church rising on Summit Avenue above the city, was well underway that year, and Catholic families across the city followed its progress closely. Residents knew their town for its breweries and its neighbor, the stockyards and packing plants of South St. Paul across the river flats, and for a lively rivalry with Minneapolis that pushed both cities to compete for trade and prestige.
