Calhoun Beach on Lake Calhoun in Minneapolis, Minnesota, was a summer destination in 1915, when the city had grown past 300,000 residents on the strength of its flour mills, lumber yards, and grain trade at St. Anthony Falls. The Minneapolis Park Board had been developing the chain of lakes on the city's southwest side for years, and Calhoun drew swimmers, boaters, and picnickers who rode streetcars out from downtown on warm weekends. Public bathing beaches like this one were part of a broader effort by city leaders to give working families affordable recreation as factories and offices filled the central districts. Residents knew the lakes as a welcome escape from the heat and smoke of the mill district, and the beach was one of the city's most popular public spaces.
