Walker, the seat of Cass County in north-central Minnesota, sat on the shore of Leech Lake in 1915, when the region's economy still rested largely on timber. Sawmills and lumber yards along the lake drew crews and families to the town, and the surrounding forests of white and red pine had been cut over for a generation, so the industry was already shifting toward smaller operations and second-growth stands. Leech Lake was also the center of the Leech Lake Ojibwe homeland, and the lake's fishing and the nearby reservation shaped daily life alongside the mills. A panoramic view of a lumber town like this would have shown residents a place built around the sawmill and the lake, a community whose fortunes rose and fell with the supply of logs.
