In 1917, Lake County, Minnesota, sat along the north shore of Lake Superior, where logging had recently stripped many of its forests and left behind stony, uneven ground. Farms here were usually small, worked by families who raised hay, potatoes, dairy cows, and garden crops, and many of those families were Scandinavian or Finnish immigrants. Their produce and dairy goods found buyers in Two Harbors, the county seat and ore-shipping port, and in the mining and lumber communities to the north and west. That spring the United States entered the First World War, and farmers across the state were urged to raise more food, a call that reached even the cutover country where farming was hard going.
