Glenwood, the seat of Pope County in west-central Minnesota, was a small farm-trade town in 1913, serving wheat, oats, and dairy families on the surrounding prairie and in the lake country. Its shops, grain elevators, and churches depended on the railroad and on rural customers who drove in on Saturdays with produce and returned with supplies. Lake Minnewaska, just beside town, drew summer visitors and gave Glenwood a resort reputation that residents took pride in. Many of the people in the photograph would have been immigrants or their children, many of them Scandinavian or German, and their town's politics and social life centered on the courthouse, the schools, and the congregations. The years before the First World War were a time of steady growth and rising automobile traffic on the county's gravel roads.
