Duluth, Minnesota, in 1913 was a busy Lake Superior port whose economy rested on shipping. Iron ore from the Mesabi Range and grain from the upper Midwest moved through its docks and elevators, and the railroads that served them ran along the waterfront. The city climbed steeply from the harbor into its hillside neighborhoods, so a view from above showed both the working lake front and the residential streets rising behind it. Residents knew Duluth as the head of the lakes, a place where the ships, the ore trains and the harbor's ship canal set the rhythm of daily life. Its population had grown quickly in the decades after the canal opened in 1871, and by 1913 the city was one of the largest in the state.
