Duluth, Minnesota, in 1907 was one of the busiest ore and grain ports on the western end of Lake Superior. Iron ore arrived from the Mesabi Range by rail and was loaded onto lake freighters, while coal came in the other direction, unloaded at docks like those shown here to fuel the city's factories, homes and the steamships themselves. The Duluth, Missabe and Northern and other lines had made the city a major rail and shipping center, and its population had climbed rapidly over the preceding decades. Civic life centered on the harbor, where dock workers, stevedores and railroad crews formed a large share of the working population. Coal docks like these were essential to keeping that trade moving through the winter months.
