Duluth in 1904 was a city of about 53,000 people, according to the 1900 census, spread up the hillside above the western tip of Lake Superior. Iron ore from the Mesabi Range now arrived by rail in great quantities, and ore docks along the waterfront loaded ships bound for the lower lakes, while grain elevators and flour mills kept the port busy through the shipping season. The Incline Railway hauled passengers and freight up the steep slope to the upper town, a convenience people relied on daily. Residents liked to call their city the Zenith City of the Unsalted Seas, a boast that reflected their confidence in the lake trade.
