Duluth, Minnesota, in 1913 was a shipping city at the western tip of Lake Superior, with its fortunes tied to iron ore from the Mesabi Range, which railroads hauled to the docks for lake freighters. Grain elevators, sawmills and flour mills lined the waterfront, and the harbor depended on the ship canal opened in 1871 and the aerial transfer bridge completed in 1905. The city had grown to nearly 80,000 residents by the 1910 census, many of them immigrants from Scandinavia, Italy and Eastern Europe who worked the docks, mills and rail yards. Locals took pride in the nickname "Zenith City of the Unsalted Seas," a booster phrase that reflected their confidence in a port they believed would rival older inland centers. From the high ground at Point of Rocks, this view took in the ships, tracks and rooftops that made that confidence seem earned.
