Duluth and Superior, sitting on either side of the St. Louis River where it meets Lake Superior, were in 1902 among the busiest ore and grain ports on the Great Lakes. Iron ore arriving by rail from the Mesabi Range was loaded into lake freighters here, and the twin cities had grown quickly on that trade, along with lumber milling and grain elevators. The harbor's long docks and shipping slips would have been the cities' most visible sign of prosperity, and local people measured their future by the tonnage passing through. Duluth had also been rebuilt after its 1870s boom and bust and was known as the lakehead, the place where the rail lines met the water.
