Hibbing, Minnesota, sat on the Mesabi Range in 1902, where open-pit iron mining had turned a young settlement into a company town within about a decade. The Mahoning pit was one of the ore workings that fed the range's growing output, and its ore moved by rail toward Lake Superior ports, mainly Duluth, where it was loaded onto ships bound for the steel mills of the Great Lakes region. Men from Finland, Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, and Scandinavia made up much of the workforce, and their families crowded into rough housing near the pits. Life revolved around shift whistles, company stores, and the weather that governed when the ore could be dug and shipped. Few residents in 1902 could have imagined that the town would later have to be moved to make way for the expanding mines.
