Hibbing, Minnesota, in 1902 was a young iron mining town on the Mesabi Range, about a decade after prospectors found rich ore in the area. The Mahoning Mine, one of the large open pits near the town, drew its workforce from immigrant families from Finland, Italy, Austria-Hungary and elsewhere in Europe. Ore from the range moved by rail to the lake docks at Duluth, where it was loaded onto ships bound for the steel mills of the Great Lakes region. Residents of the period would have known Hibbing first as a mining camp built around the pits, a place where shift whistles and ore trains set the daily rhythm. The town's later relocation, forced by the spreading mine beneath it, was still years away.
