In 1929, Hibbing was a crowded mining town on the Mesabi Range, and the Mahoning pit remained central to its working life, with steam shovels and rail cars moving ore through the summer months. Many of the men who ran that equipment were second-generation immigrants whose families had come to the range to find steady wages. The same year, the bus service that Carl Eric Wickman had started in Hibbing in 1914, first to carry miners between towns, was growing into the intercity network that would later carry the Greyhound name. The stock market crash that October would soon reach the range, and by the early 1930s falling demand for iron ore left many Hibbing families waiting for the whistle to call them back to work.
