Hibbing, Minnesota, in 1909 was a young iron mining town of a few thousand people on the Mesabi Range in the state's northeast. Its livelihood rested on the open pits and shafts at its edges, and ore moved by rail toward Lake Superior at Duluth for shipment to steel mills in the Midwest and East. Miners came from Finland, Italy, Slovenia, and other parts of Europe, and they built churches, lodges, and boarding houses on streets laid out close to the workings. The houses sat so near the mine ground that within about a decade the company would have to move the entire townsite to reach the ore beneath it.
