Virginia, Minnesota, sits on the Mesabi Iron Range in St. Louis County, and in 1914 its fortunes rose and fell with the iron ore beneath the surrounding hills. Mines and their railroads moved ore south toward the lake port at Duluth, so the town's payroll depended on shipping seasons and on the price of steel far away. The population was made up largely of immigrants from Finland, Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, and other parts of southern and eastern Europe, who built churches, lodges, and mutual aid societies along the town's streets. Across Europe that summer, the outbreak of war in Europe was beginning to reach the Range, where demand for ore and the news from home shaped daily conversation. This view shows the town as its residents knew it: a mining community still growing outward from its center.
