Hibbing in 1914 was a mining town of several thousand people on the Mesabi Range, and its fortunes followed the iron ore pits that ran along its edges. The Duluth, Missabe and Northern Railway carried ore south to the docks at Duluth, where lake freighters took it to steel centers in the Midwest and East. That summer, war broke out in Europe, and though its full effect on American ore demand came later, many of the town's Finnish, Slovene, and Italian families had kin on the other side of the Atlantic. The picture shows the town as a crowded grid of frame houses, churches, and business blocks pressed against the mine workings, the arrangement that made Hibbing a company town in all but name.
