Duluth in 1914 was a lake port of roughly 100,000 people, though the census figure for that year was not taken and the population was still climbing. Its waterfront depended on Mesabi iron ore, grain, and coal moving through the ship canal, and the outbreak of war in Europe that summer raised demand for American grain and steel. Residents still remembered the great storm of November 1913, which had sunk or stranded vessels across the lakes and left the harbor's shipping men counting their losses. Above the docks, the streets climbed steeply toward the residential hilltop, where families who worked the ore boats and elevators built their houses and watched the lake for the next season's traffic.
