West Hoboken in 1914 was a densely built township on the Palisades side of the Hudson, just across the river from Manhattan, and much of its population worked in nearby industry or commuted to New York. The township had grown rapidly in the preceding decades as German, Irish and later Eastern European immigrants settled its streets of frame and brick houses, and its churches, beer halls and German-language societies gave it a distinctly Old World character. Trolley lines and ferry connections tied it to Hoboken and the city across the water, and the Palisades rising behind the town were quarried for stone and bordered by orchards and open land. A bird's-eye view from this period captures the tight grid of rooftops and church spires that residents of the town knew as home, on the eve of the First World War.
