In 1904 Princeton was a small university town whose streets were shaped by the campus, and the western grounds shown here were still filling in with new buildings. The Gothic style that visitors now link with the university was taking hold, and the architectural firm Cope and Stewardson had been designing many of its halls since the late 1890s. Students lived in dormitories and joined the eating clubs along Prospect Avenue, where social life often mattered as much as the classroom. Town and gown were closely tied, since shopkeepers, boarding-house keepers and laundresses depended on the students, and the university's growth brought steady construction work to local builders and laborers.
