Princeton University, renamed from the College of New Jersey in 1896, sat in 1904 at the heart of a small borough in central New Jersey where the college shaped nearly every part of daily life. Nassau Hall, which had briefly served as the seat of the Continental Congress in 1783, anchored the front campus, where students crossed between classes and gathered beneath the old colonial-era walls. Woodrow Wilson, who had become president in 1902, was pushing reforms in undergraduate teaching that would soon transform the curriculum. Local merchants, boarding-house keepers, and railroad workers depended on the students' steady presence, and the town's identity rested largely on the university's reputation.
