In 1904, Princeton University's Class Day marked the end of the senior year, when graduating students gathered on campus in late spring for speeches, music, and the planting of class ivy before commencement. The college was then led by Woodrow Wilson, a former professor who had become president in 1902 and was pressing to reshape undergraduate teaching. Princeton remained a small college town in central New Jersey, where much of the local economy depended on the university, its students, and visitors arriving by rail. The town's Revolutionary War battle in January 1777 and Nassau Hall's brief service as a meeting place for Congress in 1783 gave seniors a strong sense of history on such days.
