In 1904 Princeton University, which had taken that name only in 1896, was a small college town in Mercer County, New Jersey, reached by a branch line from the Pennsylvania Railroad. Woodrow Wilson had become president in 1902 and was pushing reforms to tutor students in small preceptorial groups, changes that divided alumni and faculty. The back campus, the open lawn behind Nassau Hall, was where students gathered for athletics, drills and class activities, while the surrounding older halls housed much of the undergraduate body. Many townspeople earned their living through university service, through shops that catered to students, or on nearby farms, so the campus shaped daily life in the town.
