Princeton, New Jersey, in 1895 was a small community whose character was set largely by the College of New Jersey, which would take the name Princeton University the following year. The college drew students from across the country, and its professors, together with the staff of the nearby Princeton Theological Seminary, made up a large share of the town's professional life. Local farmers sold produce and dairy goods in the village, and a branch line linked the town to Princeton Junction on the main Pennsylvania Railroad route between New York and Philadelphia. This view shows the campus with its Gothic halls set among the town's streets, the center of daily life that residents would have recognized at once. Nassau Hall, which had housed the Continental Congress in 1783, still stood as the institution's oldest landmark.
