Princeton, New Jersey, in 1895 was a college town first and a market town second, and the College of New Jersey, whose name would change to Princeton University the following year, dominated its streets, its economy, and its social calendar. Nassau Hall, the college's central building, had been rebuilt after British troops damaged it during the Revolution, and it still anchored the campus that this view lays out across the town. Students and faculty, along with the Princeton Theological Seminary nearby, drew visitors, boarders, and shopkeepers, while the branch line linking the town to the main railroad at Princeton Junction brought in students, visitors, and freight. Residents in 1895 would have known the place less for industry than for its scholarly reputation, its rivalries in intercollegiate sport, and the steady expansion of its campus buildings.
