Princeton, New Jersey, in 1908 was a college town of a few thousand residents, built around Princeton University, whose students and faculty made up much of its population and shaped its civic life. That year Carnegie Lake, a artificial lake created by damming Stony Brook with funds from steel magnate Andrew Carnegie, gave the university a racing course for its crews and a broad, open stretch of water for recreation. Woodrow Wilson, then the university's president, was pressing reforms in undergraduate teaching and campus life, and the lake became part of the athletic and social scene that drew students and townspeople to its shores. Visitors arrived by way of the Pennsylvania Railroad's branch line from Trenton, which linked the campus to the wider region. Locals would have known the lake as the place where rowing crews trained and where winter skating drew crowds.
