Byram Bay, on the western side of Lake Hopatcong in Morris and Sussex counties, was a summer resort district in 1913. The lake had been raised by a dam in the 1820s to supply water to the Morris Canal, but by the early twentieth century its shore held cottages, boathouses and hotels for vacationers from Newark, Jersey City and New York. Railroads, especially the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western, carried city families up for the season, and launches and sailboats filled the water on summer weekends. For people in the surrounding townships, the lake meant seasonal work in hotels, boatyards and building as much as it meant recreation.
