Lake Hopatcong in 1913 was a summer playground for families from northern New Jersey and New York, and this panoramic view of its shore captures a season when the resort trade was well established. The Morris Canal was in its last years of operation, and its old cargo boats were giving way to steam and gasoline launches that carried guests between hotels, docks, and cottage colonies. Across the state, New Jersey politics that year were dominated by the approaching changes in its governorship, though on the lake the talk was mostly about the season's crowds. Residents who worked the shore, from hotel staff to boatmen, measured their year by the arrival of the first visitors on the trains from Newark and beyond.
