Lake Hopatcong in Morris and Sussex counties, New Jersey, was a summer destination in 1909, roughly two decades after resort development had transformed its shoreline. The lake had long served as a water supply for the Morris Canal, which carried coal and iron ore across northern New Jersey, so its level and its role in regional industry were closely watched. By the early 1900s, rail lines brought vacationers from New York and Newark to lakeside hotels, boarding houses, and cottage colonies, and pleasure boats and steamers crowded the water on summer weekends. Many residents and visitors knew the lake as a place of leisure and social life, where families gathered for boating, dances, and sailing regattas.
