Lake Hopatcong, in Morris and Sussex counties, New Jersey, was a popular summer destination in 1909. Its shoreline was dotted with hotels, boarding houses, and lakeside cottages that drew vacationers from New York and northern New Jersey, many of them arriving by rail on lines that served the lake. The water also fed the Morris Canal, which carried coal and iron ore across the state until the canal's decline in the 1920s. Pleasure boats, sailing and launch races, and the social calendar of the lakeside clubs gave the community much of its character, and local residents would have known the lake as a summer retreat as much as a source of water and commerce.
