Lake Hopatcong in Morris and Sussex counties, New Jersey, was the state's largest freshwater lake by the 1910s, and by 1913 its shoreline at Nolans Point was a well-known summer destination. The lake had been dammed in the 1820s to feed the Morris Canal, and by the early twentieth century rail lines brought city families from Newark and New York to hotels, boarding houses, and cottage colonies along its banks. Nolans Point, on the lake's eastern side, drew steamboat excursions, bathing, and dancing pavilions, and seasonal life there centered on leisure rather than heavy industry. The panorama records that resort world in the year before the First World War reshaped American summer travel.
