Lake Hopatcong, in Morris and Sussex counties, was by 1913 one of the best-known summer destinations in northern New Jersey. The lake had been enlarged by a dam in the early 1800s to feed the Morris Canal, and over the following decades its shoreline filled with hotels, boarding houses, and cottages. Railroads carried city families from Newark and New York to the lake each summer, and the water supported a busy round of boating, bathing, and yacht club racing. Pickerel Point, a shoreline area on the lake, was one of the many small resort and cottage settlements where those visitors spent their holidays. Life there in 1913 revolved around the warm months, while the surrounding farms and small towns kept going through the rest of the year.
