Lake Hopatcong in Morris and Sussex counties, New Jersey, was a summer destination in 1909, and The Isles, a residential and recreation development on its shores, reflected that. The lake had been enlarged in the early 1800s to feed the Morris Canal, which carried coal and iron ore across the state, but by the early twentieth century its economic life depended more on vacationers than on canal traffic. Railroad lines brought city families from New York and Newark to lakeside hotels, boarding houses, and cottages for the season. Boating, fishing, and social gatherings on the water were the main pastimes, and residents of the region knew the lake chiefly as a place to escape the heat of the cities.
