Lake Hopatcong in Morris and Sussex counties was New Jersey's largest natural lake in 1910, and its shoreline was filling with summer colonies. The lake had been raised by a dam in the early 1800s to feed the Morris Canal, but by then the canal's freight traffic was declining as railroads took over the hauling, which shifted the lake's economy toward its resort trade. The Lake Hopatcong Yacht Club, founded in 1905, was helping organize sailing on the water, and growing numbers of families were renting or building cottages for the full season rather than a single weekend. Residents of the surrounding townships would have known the lake mainly as a source of seasonal work at hotels, boathouses, and stores.
