Carnegie Lake sits on the edge of Princeton University's campus in Mercer County, New Jersey, and in 1908 it was still a fairly new feature of the college. Andrew Carnegie's gift had made it possible in 1906, and the lake was built mainly as a rowing course for the university's crews, so students and alumni tied it closely to athletic pride. The shoreline and boathouses in this view reflect a campus that was expanding quickly under President Woodrow Wilson, whose plans for reforming undergraduate teaching and his bitter quarrels over the proposed graduate college were the talk of the campus that same year. Princeton then was a small college town, and its residents and students would have known the lake as a place for regattas, practice runs, and summer afternoons on the water.
