In 1905 the quadrangle at Princeton University was anchored by Nassau Hall, the college's oldest building, which had been rebuilt after a fire in 1802. The building had housed British troops during the Revolution, and in 1783 the Continental Congress met there, briefly making Princeton the national capital. Townspeople still pointed to the Battle of Princeton in January 1777, fought just outside town, as the event that gave the place its public memory. Across the square, Princeton Theological Seminary kept its own separate, older tradition, so the town in those years was shaped as much by Revolutionary memory and church learning as by the college's undergraduate life.
