Princeton in 1909 was a small borough in central New Jersey, where life ran alongside two institutions: the university and the Princeton Theological Seminary, founded in 1812 and still training Presbyterian ministers nearby. Residents still spoke of the Battle of Princeton, fought on January 3, 1777, when Washington's troops drove British regulars from the town's edge. Shops, printers and livery stables followed the academic calendar, and commencement in June swelled the town with families and alumni. Motorcars were still a novelty on the local roads that year, and horse-drawn wagons carried coal, feed and produce between town and the surrounding farms.
