Princeton University in 1902 was a college of roughly 1,000 students, still governed under the presidency of Francis Landey Patton, who had led the school since 1888. The campus sat in a small borough in central New Jersey, where the economy rested mostly on the university, local farming, and the railroad line connecting the town to Trenton and New York. Students lived and studied in Gothic-style halls, and the eating clubs and athletic rivalries with Yale and Harvard shaped much of college social life. Within a few years, the faculty and trustees would clash bitterly over the role of the graduate school, a dispute that ended Patton's tenure in 1902 and set the campus on a new course under Woodrow Wilson.
