In 1909, Princeton University was still a small college town in central New Jersey, with its campus and borough economy closely tied to the school's roughly 1,000 students and faculty. Woodrow Wilson, who had become president in 1902, was pushing reforms that reshaped student life, including the preceptorial system of small tutorial groups and a plan to rebuild the campus around residential quadrangles. The railroad link through Princeton Junction carried students, visitors and supplies to and from Trenton, Philadelphia and New York, while local shops and farms served the faculty families and townspeople. Nassau Hall, which had been burned and rebuilt during the Revolutionary War era and again in 1855, still stood at the center of the campus and was the image most people in the region associated with the college. Wilson would leave Princeton in 1910 to run for governor of New Jersey, which ended the period of his presidency that this view captures.
