Princeton in 1909 was a small college town in central New Jersey, where the university's roughly 1,000 undergraduates set the rhythm of daily life. In 1906 the university had created Carnegie Lake by damming Stony Brook, and the water became a training site for crews preparing for intercollegiate races against Yale and Harvard. Farms in the surrounding countryside supplied milk, produce and hay to the town, while families who had lived there for generations watched the campus expand in stone and brick. Visitors arriving for football games or class reunions would have found a community whose shops, boarding houses and streets depended heavily on the college calendar.
