Princeton University, then only a few years into its 1896 change of name from the College of New Jersey, sat in a small college town in central New Jersey, and in 1904 its central grounds were still the heart of campus life. Woodrow Wilson, who had become president in 1902, was pressing ahead with reforms to the undergraduate course of study, including the preceptorial system of small-group teaching. The Collegiate Gothic halls built in the late 1890s gave the campus a unified look that alumni and students took pride in, and the institution drew most of its students from well-off families in the Northeast. A short rail spur linked the town to the wider rail network, so visitors, parents, and athletic teams could reach Princeton without much trouble. Around the quadrangle, students would have known the place as a residential college above all, where daily routine centered on classes, dining, clubs, and the rivalries of the academic year.
