Princeton, New Jersey, in 1904 was still a small college town built around the College of New Jersey's successor institution, Princeton University, which had taken its present name only in 1896. Woodrow Wilson had become university president in 1902 and was pressing for changes in undergraduate teaching and campus life, debates that drew attention well beyond the town. Students and townspeople alike relied on the branch line that ran from Princeton Junction on the Pennsylvania Railroad, which linked the campus to Trenton and to New York. The western part of the campus, shown here, was a place where the university was still growing, and most residents knew Princeton first as a college town with Nassau Hall at its heart.
