Dickinson, North Dakota, in 1914 was a Northern Pacific railroad town on the Heart River, serving as the seat of Stark County in the southwestern part of the state. The homestead boom that followed the 1909 Enlarged Homestead Act was then bringing new families onto the open prairie, and wheat, livestock, and hauling grain and cattle to market through the railroad shaped daily life. Merchants, grain buyers, and land agents filled the main business streets, and the town looked to the railroad for its link to Minneapolis and the Pacific coast. Residents also knew the nearby Badlands and the region's coal seams, which supplied fuel for homes and local businesses. This view captures a community still young, with its growth tied closely to the rail line and the farms spreading outward from it.
