Marmarth, in southwestern North Dakota's Slope County, was a young railroad town in 1914, built along the Milwaukee Road's extension across the state's western edge only a few years earlier. The line brought homesteaders into the open grazing country along the Little Missouri River, and the town served as a shipping point for cattle, grain, and lignite coal from nearby mines. Its streets, stores, and churches were still being filled in as settlers arrived under the federal homestead laws of the period, many of them hopeful that dry-land farming would pay. Residents of the time would have known Marmarth as a rail stop and supply center on a frontier that was changing fast, and the drought and falling prices that followed later in the decade would test every claim made in these years.
