In 1914, the Whitestone Hill battlefield in Dickey County, North Dakota, was a quiet stretch of prairie that still carried the memory of September 3, 1863. On that day, Union troops under General Alfred Sully attacked a camp of Dakota people, a fight that grew out of the Dakota War of 1862 in Minnesota and the wider conflict over land in the region. By the time this photograph was made, the surrounding country had been settled for farming, and wheat and livestock were the main sources of income for families in the James River valley. Railroad lines had reached many of the small towns nearby, carrying grain to market and bringing new settlers into the state. For local residents, the hill was known less as a national military event than as the site of a fight that had shaped the land they now farmed.
