Williston, North Dakota, in 1914 was a Great Northern railroad town on the western prairie, shaped by the line that reached it in 1887 and by the wheat and flax farms spreading across the surrounding countryside. The experimental farm on its edge was part of a federal effort to find crops and tillage methods that could succeed in the semi-arid western part of the state, where homesteaders had arrived in large numbers during the wetter years of the 1900s. Grain elevators and rail shipments linked local farmers to distant markets, and the farm's trial plots drew close attention from settlers deciding what to plant. Civic life centered on the county seat, its churches, and its Main Street stores, while many residents still measured their fortunes by each season's rainfall.
