In 1915, Williston, North Dakota, was the seat of Williams County and sat near the Missouri River, where its fortunes depended heavily on distant grain markets. The war that had broken out in Europe the year before drove wheat prices upward, and farmers in the surrounding country pushed to bring more ground under the plow. At the experimental farm on the town's edge, state and federal workers tested dry-land crop varieties and cultivation methods for a region where rain fell unevenly from one year to the next. Visitors who drove out from town to look at the plots would have understood that a single poor season could wipe out a family's savings, and that the work there aimed to make such losses less common.
