Fargo, North Dakota, was a Red River city of roughly 30,000 people in 1933, and its economy rested on wheat and the railroads that carried it. The Northern Pacific's yards and shops made the city an important rail center, and grain elevators and milling tied it to farms across the Red River Valley. The Depression had hit the region hard, with falling wheat prices, bank failures, and the drought that dried out much of the state in the early 1930s. A large convention gathering in such a year would have drawn local businessmen, farm organizers, and civic leaders who were looking for ways to steady a shaken economy. Fargo residents of the time knew their city as a trade and transportation hub on the edge of the prairie, a place that depended on the harvest and the trains.
