Ray, in Williams County in northwestern North Dakota, was a young railroad town in 1914, built up during the homestead rush that brought settlers onto the prairie after 1900. Its economy rested on wheat, flax, and other small grains that farmers hauled by wagon to elevators and shipped by rail. The region was still expanding, with new families arriving faster than schools, churches, and roads could keep up. Within a few years, drought and falling grain prices would test many of the claims made on this land, and the optimism of a town only a decade or so old was about to meet hard years on the plains.
